The Woman Who Made Computers Speak English
Born on December 9, 1906, in New York City, Grace Murray Hopper started her journey as a curious kid who once dismantled seven alarm clocks to figure out how they worked. Her parents, bless them, saw a future engineer, not a destructive menace.
She earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale in 1934—at a time when women earning doctoral degrees were about as common as working quantum computers. Then she joined the Navy during World War II and became one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer, a beast so large it occupied an entire room and sounded like a knitting factory on steroids.
